Craft Lake City Workshop: Leatherwork

December 12, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Inspired by Ken Burns’ upcoming PBS documentary THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, this hands-on, 2-hour craft workshop invites you to explore early American leathercraft at the PBS Utah Studio. Join local artisan Stephanie Mma-Powell of Powell Supply as she guides you in crafting a durable leather book cover in the style of 18th- and 19th-century America, when handmade covers protected journals, ledgers and personal writings across the colonies. Learn usable techniques early American leatherworkers practiced, including cutting, punching, shaping and decorative stamping. Create a reusable leather sleeve that fits most standard notebooks and experience the feel of traditional craftsmanship. You’ll leave with: • A finished leather book cover • Practical techniques you can reuse at home • A relaxed creative experience with natural leather Learn You will explore how early American leatherworkers created everyday objects and get a feel for the simple techniques they used. Stephanie will guide you through cutting, punching, shaping and basic decorative stamping as you make a reusable leather sleeve that fits most standard notebooks. You’ll leave with a finished book cover, practical leatherworking skills and a hands-on experience connected to the craftsmanship of the time. Perfect for crafters, creatives and anyone interested in traditional making. All materials included, no experience needed.
